ISO 9001 is one of the most widely recognised quality management standards in the world. It provides organisations with a structured approach to managing quality, meeting customer expectations and continually improving the way they operate.
On 16th September 2026 we saw the release of ISO 9001:2026; this latest version replaces ISO 9001:2015 and updates the Standard to reflect the way businesses operate today.
In this article, we explain what has changed, what’s staying the same and how to transition to the revised Standard.
What is ISO 9001:2026?
ISO 9001:2026 sets out requirements for a quality management system (QMS). It can be used by organisations of virtually any size or sector to establish consistent processes, improve performance and provide confidence that customer and organisational requirements are being addressed.
The new edition maintains the familiar foundations of ISO 9001:2015 while placing additional attention on areas that have become increasingly important in modern organisations. These include leadership, organisational culture, strategic alignment, people, risks and opportunities, and the way quality management contributes to overall business performance.
The revision is not intended to make quality management more complicated. Instead, the updated Standard aims to ensure that quality remains relevant in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing business environment.

What's changing in ISO 9001:2026?
While the overall structure remains familiar, there are several areas that organisations should pay particular attention to when reviewing their existing systems.
Increased focus on people and awareness
Processes and procedures are only effective when the people responsible for carrying them out understand their role.
The revised standard places greater emphasis on awareness, including the importance of quality culture and ethical behaviour.
For organisations, this reinforces the need to ensure employees understand how their work contributes to the effectiveness of the QMS and the wider objectives of the business.
Stronger connection between quality and business strategy
A quality management system should support the direction of the organisation.
ISO 9001:2026 places greater emphasis on connecting the quality policy and management system with the organisation’s context and strategic direction.
For businesses, this is an important distinction. A QMS should not operate as a separate administrative function. Ideally, it should help the organisation achieve its objectives and make better business decisions.
Greater emphasis on leadership
Leadership has always been an important part of ISO 9001, but the 2026 edition places additional emphasis on the role senior management plays in creating an effective quality culture.
Quality should not sit solely with the quality manager or quality department. Leaders need to demonstrate that quality, ethical behaviour and continual improvement are part of the organisation’s everyday way of working.
This means looking beyond documented procedures and considering how leadership decisions influence quality throughout the business.
Additional guidance for organisations
ISO 9001:2026 also includes a new Annex A intended to provide greater explanation around concepts, terminology and the intent behind the requirements.
This additional guidance can help organisations interpret the standard and apply its requirements within their own particular circumstances.
A clearer approach to risks and opportunities
Risk-based thinking remains an important feature of ISO 9001, but the revised edition provides greater clarity around the relationship between risks and opportunities.
Organisations should consider not only what could go wrong, but also where opportunities exist to improve processes, performance and results.
This can encourage a more proactive approach to quality management, helping businesses identify potential issues while also looking for ways to improve.
What’s staying the same in ISO 9001:2026?
Despite the updates, ISO 9001:2026 retains much of the approach that existing users will recognise.
Customer focus, the process approach, risk-based thinking and continual improvement remain central to effective quality management. Organisations that already use ISO management system standards should find the overall structure familiar.
The consideration of climate change, which was incorporated into ISO 9001 through the 2024 amendment, also continues to apply.
For existing ISO 9001:2015 users, this continuity is important. The transition should be about understanding and addressing the changes rather than completely rebuilding an established management system.
What do the ISO 9001:2026 changes mean in practice?
“For many businesses, the ISO 9001:2026 transition can be incorporated into their existing audit programme. Your certification body should be able to explain the applicable transition arrangements, audit requirements and timescales for your organisation.
The important thing is to understand the requirements early and give yourself enough time to assess, update and implement any necessary changes before the end of the 3-year transition period.”
