5 minutes with Barry West

This month in our five minutes with series, we talk to Barry West MCQI CQP AMIOSH, Director QEHS, North Europe, Wartsila Corporation, Services.

What has been your biggest learning experience when completing an audit?
Learning how things are done, how people are engaged and looking together at new ways to consider improvement.

I have found a non-conformity do you have any advice on the best way to communicate this to the auditee?
Once discovered; my preferred way is to go back with the Auditee to the start of the process and step forward discovering how it happened together, then ask the question “well we discovered what went wrong, what’s the consequences, and how do we prevent this happening”. Then you have “buy in”.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing 14001:2015?
Getting the thought process that all stakeholders to be considered as part of a corrective action. Current system is “blinkered” to mainly internal factors and internal costs.

When should I start planning for the 9001:2015 changes?
Now; we have a framework of what we understand the new standard to be. Good management systems that are built around how the businesses work should be able to adapt quickly, those who have designed the management system Clause by Clause are likely to struggle.

What would be you secret superpower?
Talking and listening, using the ratio of ears to mouth correctly 2:1, listen twice as much as you speak.
