ISO Guide 83

What is ISO Guide 83?

Guide 83 isn’t a standard in itself, but rather a guide to writing management system standards. At the moment Guide 83 is under consultation, but once formally adopted it will influence all management system standards writing and in turn the standards themselves.

A management system is the framework for managing and continually improving your organization’s policies, procedures and processes, regardless of your size or industry. It is used to ensure that an organization can fulfill it’s objectives, in areas such as:

  • satisfying the customer’s quality requirements
  • complying with regulations, or
  • meeting environmental objectives. Click here to read more...

What is the difference between a process and procedure?

ISO 9001: 2008 requires organisations to define processes and procedures. In simple terms the difference between process and a procedure in this context is that a process is what you do and a procedure is how you do it. By introducing the process approach it is possible to link quality objectives with the overall objectives of the organisation. An example would be delivery performance, this being the measure of the performance of the delivery process, an important measure for most businesses. Click here to read more...

An overview of ISO 9001

Introduction

ISO 9001 is an international standard for quality management systems (QMS). Although previous versions of the standard reflect its manufacturing origins the standard now mirrors the much wider application throughout private and public sector organisations. The standard is reviewed and revised every 6-8 years based upon feedback from users, the last major revision being in 2000 with a minor revision planned for late 2008.

Below is a description of the key requirements of ISO 9001. We have deliberately tried to remove all ‘quality speak’ from our description. Click here to read more...

Management Commitment-performance measures are the key

Managers will rarely admit that they are not committed to management systems. To show they are committed they attend management review meetings, they also allow some of their staff to conduct audits. Some managers even stay in the office when an audit is being conducted! This may be a cynical view of a senior manager’s commitment to a management system but all too often it is a reality. Is Work Study Dead?

In the 1970’s every manufacturing company employed a work study engineer. Local authorities and government departments were also awash with management services officers, the public sector equivalent of work study engineers. Despite a number of name changes the role of work study has virtually disappeared from the UK, culminating in its professional institute admitting its membership was in terminal decline.
